Somewhere around the bleary three-month mark, someone will suggest a dream feed to you like it's a cheat code for sleep. The pitch is seductive: feed your baby one more time before you go to bed, and maybe — maybe — you'll buy yourself a longer first stretch before the next wake-up. Sometimes it works beautifully. Sometimes it does absolutely nothing, or even backfires. Here's the honest version.

What a dream feed actually is

A dream feed is a feed you offer your baby while they're still mostly asleep, timed to your bedtime rather than their hunger. Instead of waiting for your baby to wake and cry for a feed at, say, 1 a.m., you gently rouse them just enough to feed around 10 or 11 p.m. — right before you turn in. The hope is to "top them up" so their natural wake-up gets pushed later, ideally past your own first deep sleep.

Crucially, you're not fully waking the baby. You lift them or bring the breast/bottle to them, let them feed in a drowsy state, and settle them straight back down.

Why parents try it

The appeal is simple math on a tired night: your hardest stretch is usually the first one after you fall asleep, when you most need uninterrupted rest. By feeding right before bed, you align your baby's longest sleep window with your own.
