The short answer: yes, with a ceiling

Major health bodies agree that moderate caffeine is compatible with breastfeeding. The CDC notes that caffeine passes into breast milk only in small amounts, and that consuming up to about 300 mg per day — roughly two to three 8-ounce cups of brewed coffee — is generally acceptable for breastfeeding mothers. The NHS is slightly more conservative, suggesting breastfeeding mothers keep caffeine closer to 200 mg per day, especially in the early weeks.

Neither body says zero. Research summarized in the NIH's LactMed database shows that low-to-moderate maternal caffeine intake rarely causes measurable effects in breastfed babies. How caffeine actually reaches your baby

When you drink coffee, caffeine is absorbed quickly and a small fraction crosses into your milk. According to LactMed, a baby receives only around 1% of the mother's weight-adjusted caffeine dose through breast milk. Caffeine levels in milk typically peak one to two hours after you drink it, then decline as your body clears it.

That percentage sounds tiny — and it is — but it lands in a body that processes caffeine very differently from yours, which is where your baby's age becomes the most important variable in the whole equation.

Why your baby's age changes the math

Adults clear half a dose of caffeine in roughly four to six hours. Newborns can't do that. Many lactation consultants suggest having your coffee right after a feed rather than right before one. And remember that fussiness has many more common causes — growth spurts, cluster feeding, and developmental leaps among them. If symptoms persist after you've reduced caffeine, talk to your pediatrician rather than assuming coffee is the culprit.

Energy drinks, tea, and chocolate

A few special cases worth knowing:

Energy drinks are the one category where caution genuinely tightens. Beyond caffeine, many contain high doses of other stimulants and additives that aren't well studied in lactation. The NHS and most pediatric guidance suggest avoiding them while breastfeeding rather than trying to fit them under the caffeine ceiling.

Tea is a gentler source — roughly half the caffeine of coffee per cup — and an easy swap for the afternoon. Herbal teas are mostly caffeine-free, though check labels: some blends (like yerba mate) are caffeinated, and a few herbs aren't recommended while breastfeeding.

Chocolate contains both caffeine and theobromine, a milder relative. At normal dessert quantities it barely moves your daily total. You would have to eat heroic amounts of chocolate to approach the levels associated with infant irritability in the literature — a rare piece of genuinely good news in postpartum nutrition.

The bottom line for tired moms

Keep the coffee. Evidence supports up to 200–300 mg of caffeine per day while breastfeeding — stay nearer 200 mg in the newborn weeks, drink it right after a morning feed, count all your sources honestly, and skip the energy drinks.
